What Is an Annual Fee Waiver on a Credit Card?

    Try , or

    Quick answer

An annual fee waiver means the card issuer does not charge the normal yearly card fee for a specified period or because stated waiver conditions are met. In the UAE, a waiver may be automatic, promotional, tied to annual spending, or offered after a customer request. A waiver is not the same as a card that permanently has no annual fee, so always check the card’s Key Facts Statement and current fee schedule.

How does an annual fee waiver work?

A credit card can have a published annual fee but still allow the fee to be waived in certain circumstances. The bank sets the waiver conditions. Common structures include a first-year waiver, a waiver after reaching a specified annual spend, a promotional waiver for selected customers, or a discretionary waiver following a customer request.

The key point is that the underlying fee still exists unless the product is genuinely marketed as having no annual fee. If the waiver conditions are not met in a later year, the published annual fee may become payable.

Common waiver structures in the UAE

    • First-year-free: the first annual fee is waived, but subsequent years may be charged.
    • Spend-based waiver: the annual fee is waived if eligible purchases during the defined period reach the bank’s threshold.
    • Relationship-based waiver: selected customers may receive preferential pricing based on their banking relationship or package.
    • Promotional waiver: a limited campaign may temporarily waive the fee.
    • Discretionary waiver: a bank may consider a waiver request, but this should never be assumed or treated as guaranteed.

What should you check before relying on a waiver?

    • The normal annual fee before any waiver.
    • Whether the waiver is for one year or continues if conditions are met.
    • The exact eligible-spend threshold and measurement period.
    • Whether excluded transactions such as cash advances, fees, balance transfers or other non-retail transactions count toward the threshold.
    • Whether supplementary cards have separate annual fees.
    • When the fee is charged and how a reversal or waiver appears on the statement.

A headline such as “first year free” tells you only about the promotional period. The longer-term cost of keeping the card depends on the standard fee and the conditions that apply after the offer ends.

    Example: spend-based annual fee waiver

Illustration only: suppose a card has an annual fee of AED 500 and the bank waives it when eligible annual retail spend reaches AED 30,000. If the cardholder records AED 32,000 of qualifying spend during the bank’s measurement period, the fee may be waived under those stated terms. If only AED 27,000 qualifies, the normal fee may apply. Actual thresholds, exclusions and timing are bank-specific.

Does a fee waiver make a card better value?

Not automatically. A useful comparison looks at the total card value: annual fee, rewards or cashback, foreign transaction costs, lounge or travel benefits, insurance benefits where applicable, and how closely those features match your real spending. A higher-fee card can sometimes provide value for a customer who genuinely uses its benefits, while a low-fee or no-fee card may be better for someone who does not.

What if the annual fee is charged unexpectedly?

Check the KFS, fee schedule and the waiver terms that applied when you took the card. If you believe the bank has charged a fee contrary to the disclosed terms, contact the bank through its complaint channel and keep the relevant offer or communication. Do not assume that a previous waiver automatically continues in later years.

    Frequently asked questions

Is an annual fee waiver permanent?

Not necessarily. Some waivers apply only for the first year or only when specified conditions are met. Check the current terms for each renewal year.

Is “first year free” the same as no annual fee?

No. It generally means the first annual fee is waived. A standard annual fee may apply from the next year.

Can spending qualify me for an annual fee waiver?

Some cards use spend-based waiver thresholds. The required amount, eligible transaction types and measurement period are set by the issuer.

Can I ask the bank to waive my annual fee?

You can ask, but a discretionary waiver is not guaranteed. The bank decides whether any waiver applies.

Do supplementary cards have separate annual fees?

They can. Check the KFS or fee schedule because primary and supplementary card charges may differ.
