What Is a Credit Card Annual Fee in the UAE?

    Try , or

    Quick answer

A credit card annual fee is a recurring charge that an issuer may apply for keeping a card account open and providing its features or benefits. Some cards have no annual fee, some waive it for the first year, and others may waive it when stated conditions are met. The fee should be assessed together with the card’s benefits, eligibility rules, other charges and how you actually plan to use the card.

    What is an annual fee?

An annual fee is a charge that may be billed once each year for holding a credit card. It is separate from transaction-based charges such as cash-advance fees, foreign-transaction fees or late-payment fees. Whether a card has an annual fee, and how much it is, depends on the product and the issuer.

Cards with an annual fee often bundle benefits such as rewards, travel privileges, lounge access, insurance benefits or higher earn rates. That does not automatically make a fee-based card better value. The useful question is whether the benefits you realistically use are worth more to you than the total cost of holding and using the card.

Annual fee, first-year-free and no-annual-fee cards

These labels can mean different things, so read the exact product wording. “No annual fee” generally means the card does not charge that recurring fee under the product terms. “First year free” normally means the fee is waived for an introductory period and may apply from a later anniversary. A fee waiver may also depend on conditions such as annual spend, relationship status or a promotional campaign.

Under the CBUAE Consumer Protection Standards, advertising that describes a financial product or service as “free” must be clear about the limits of that claim. If something is free only for a defined period, the customer should be told that charges may apply after the period ends.

How annual fee waivers can work

A waiver is not the same thing as a permanently fee-free card. An issuer may waive an annual fee automatically or after stated conditions are met. Examples can include reaching a qualifying spend, holding another relationship with the bank, meeting a salary-transfer condition or receiving a targeted retention offer.

Do not assume the previous year’s waiver will repeat. Check the current Key Facts Statement, fee schedule and the specific conditions attached to the offer.

How to decide whether an annual fee is worth it

Compare the fee against benefits you are likely to use, not benefits that simply look valuable on a brochure. Start with your expected annual card spend, the categories you use most, the rewards you can realistically redeem, and any travel or lifestyle benefits you would otherwise pay for.

Also consider the card’s other costs. A strong rewards package can be outweighed by finance charges, foreign-currency costs, cash-advance fees or other charges if those apply to the way you use the card.

    Simple example

Assume Card A has no annual fee and gives modest rewards. Card B charges AED 700 a year but includes benefits you genuinely value at about AED 1,000 over the year. If you would have paid for those benefits anyway and the card’s other costs are suitable, Card B may still represent better value for you. If you rarely use the benefits, the same AED 700 fee may add cost without adding meaningful value.

This is only an illustration. Card pricing, rewards and benefit conditions vary by issuer and can change.

    What to check before applying

Check the Key Facts Statement and current fee schedule for the annual fee, when it is charged, whether supplementary cards have separate fees, whether any waiver conditions apply, and what happens after an introductory period. Also review the eligibility requirements and the costs that matter for your likely usage.

FinShark can help you compare card features, but the issuing bank sets the final fees, eligibility and approval criteria.

    Frequently asked questions

Is an annual fee charged every year?

Usually it is a recurring yearly charge if the product has one, but the timing and any waiver conditions depend on the issuer and card terms.

Does “first year free” mean the card has no annual fee?

No. It normally means the annual fee is waived for an introductory period. Check what fee applies after that period and when it will be billed.

Can a bank waive my annual fee?

Some cards provide published waiver conditions and banks may also run promotions or relationship-based offers. A waiver is not guaranteed unless the product terms say so.

Are supplementary-card fees the same as the primary-card annual fee?

Not necessarily. Supplementary-card pricing can be different, so check the fee schedule for each card type.

    Should I always choose a no-annual-fee card?

Not necessarily. A fee-based card can still provide better value if you genuinely use benefits or rewards worth more than the cost. Compare the complete product, not one fee in isolation.

Where should I check the latest annual fee?

Use the issuer’s current Key Facts Statement and fee schedule. Promotional pages can change, so the formal product disclosures are the better reference point.
