What Is a Credit Card Cash Advance in the UAE?

    Try , or

    Quick answer

A cash advance is cash, or a cash-equivalent transaction, taken against a credit card facility. It reduces your available credit and can be priced differently from an ordinary card purchase. A separate cash-advance fee may apply and the normal interest-free treatment for purchases may not apply. Always check the card’s Key Facts Statement and fee schedule before using this feature.

    What is a cash advance?

A cash advance lets a cardholder access part of a credit card facility as cash or through a transaction the issuer treats as cash-equivalent. A common example is withdrawing cash from an ATM using a credit card, but some issuers can classify other transactions as cash-equivalent under their card terms.

The amount is not taken from your current or savings account. It becomes part of the amount owed on the credit card, subject to the card’s available credit, any separate cash limit and the issuer’s transaction rules.

Why can a cash advance cost more than a card purchase?

Cash advances are commonly priced separately from retail purchases. The issuer may charge a cash-advance fee and may apply finance charges under different timing rules. Under the CBUAE Consumer Protection Standards, the rule that prevents finance charges on an eligible credit-card balance paid in full by the due date specifically excludes cash-advance transactions.

That means you should not assume a purchase grace period automatically protects a cash withdrawal from finance charges. The exact fee, rate, start date for finance charges and any ATM-related costs depend on the issuer’s current product terms.

Cash advance fee vs finance charge

These are different costs. A cash-advance fee is a transaction charge for accessing cash. A finance charge is the borrowing cost that can accrue on the cash-advance balance under the card agreement.

Some cards express the transaction fee as a percentage, a fixed amount or a minimum charge. FinShark should not assume one market-wide fee because card pricing varies. The current Key Facts Statement and fee schedule are the right places to check the exact cost.

    Illustrative example

Suppose a cardholder withdraws AED 2,000 and the card hypothetically charges a 3% cash-advance fee. The transaction fee would be AED 60 before considering any finance charge or ATM-related cost that may apply.

This example is for explanation only. It is not a current fee quote for any UAE card and does not include product-specific pricing.

    Cash advance vs debit-card withdrawal

A debit-card withdrawal normally uses money already available in a bank account. A credit-card cash advance uses borrowed credit. That difference is why a credit-card cash withdrawal can carry a separate fee and financing cost even when withdrawing cash from your own debit account would not.

If you need cash, compare the total cost and repayment implications before choosing a credit-card cash advance simply because the facility is available.

What to check before using a cash advance

    • Your available cash-advance limit, which may be lower than the overall credit limit.
    • The cash-advance fee and whether a minimum fee applies.
    • The finance rate or profit treatment and when it begins to apply.
    • ATM or overseas withdrawal charges, if relevant.
    • How the transaction affects your available credit and next statement.
    • Whether a lower-cost alternative is available for the amount you need.

    Frequently asked questions

Is a cash advance the same as withdrawing with a debit card?

No. A debit withdrawal generally uses your own account balance. A credit-card cash advance uses a credit facility and can have separate fees and finance charges.

Do cash advances get an interest-free period?

Do not assume so. CBUAE credit-card standards distinguish cash advances from the purchase-balance treatment that can avoid finance charges when the eligible balance is paid in full by the due date. Check your issuer’s terms.

Does a cash advance reduce my credit limit?

It uses part of the credit facility, so it normally reduces available credit until the balance is repaid and posted. A separate cash limit may also apply.

Can I take my full credit limit as cash?

Not necessarily. Issuers can set a separate cash-advance limit and transaction limits, so the available cash amount can be lower than the total card limit.

Where do I find the cash-advance fee?

Check the current Key Facts Statement, fee schedule and card terms issued by the bank.
