What Is a Credit Limit on a Credit Card in the UAE?

    Try , or

    Quick answer

A credit limit is the maximum amount of revolving credit approved on a credit card or similar facility. It is not a spending target and it is different from available credit, which changes as transactions and repayments are posted. Banks set limits using their own underwriting and regulatory processes, and a limit increase requires the customer’s express consent.

    What does credit limit mean?

Your credit limit is the maximum approved amount that can be outstanding on a revolving credit facility, subject to the issuer’s terms. If a card has a AED 20,000 limit, the account can generally carry transactions and balances only within the available portion of that facility.

The limit belongs to the account, not to each individual transaction. Supplementary-card spending commonly uses the same overall account limit unless the issuer provides additional controls.

    Credit limit vs available credit

The approved credit limit is the ceiling. Available credit is the unused part of that ceiling after posted transactions, pending transactions, fees, instalment plans and repayments are taken into account according to the issuer’s system.

For example, if the approved limit is AED 20,000 and AED 6,000 is currently using the facility, the simple remaining amount is AED 14,000 before considering pending items or issuer-specific holds.

How is a credit limit decided?

A bank can consider income, existing financial obligations, credit history, product criteria and its own risk policies when deciding whether to approve a card and what limit to offer. CBUAE responsible-financing standards require licensed financial institutions to assess a consumer’s financial situation and creditworthiness before granting credit.

A high salary alone does not guarantee a particular credit limit. The final limit is an underwriting decision made by the issuing bank.

Can a bank increase your credit limit automatically?

CBUAE Consumer Protection Standards state that a licensed financial institution must not automatically increase a credit-card limit without the consumer’s express consent. When offering an increase to an existing limit, the institution must perform a new check with Al Etihad Credit Bureau for updated credit history and obtain the consumer’s express consent before applying the increase.

This is an important distinction between an offer for a higher limit and an increase that actually takes effect.

    Credit limit vs cash-advance limit

A card can have a separate cash-advance limit that is lower than the total credit limit. Being approved for AED 30,000 of card credit therefore does not necessarily mean AED 30,000 can be withdrawn as cash.

Cash advances can also have different fees and finance-charge treatment, so the two limits should not be treated as interchangeable.

Does a higher credit limit mean you should spend more?

No. A higher limit increases available borrowing capacity, but affordability still depends on income, existing obligations and your ability to repay. Using credit simply because it is available can increase finance costs and monthly repayment pressure.

Treat the limit as a maximum facility, not a recommended budget.

    Frequently asked questions

Can I ask my bank to increase my credit limit?

You can request a review, but approval and the amount of any increase depend on the issuer’s criteria, credit assessment and applicable rules.

Does a higher credit limit guarantee a better credit score?

No. A limit by itself does not guarantee any Credit Score outcome. Payment behaviour, balances and other credit information also matter.

Why is my available credit lower than my credit limit?

Posted or pending transactions, instalment plans, fees, holds and other account activity can reduce the amount currently available to spend.

Is the cash withdrawal limit the same as the credit limit?

Not necessarily. A separate cash-advance limit can apply.

Can a bank increase my limit without asking me?

CBUAE Consumer Protection Standards require express consumer consent for an increase to an existing credit-card limit and require an updated Al Etihad Credit Bureau check when the increase is offered.
