What Is a Credit Card Welcome Bonus?

    Try , or

    Quick answer

A welcome bonus is an introductory incentive offered to eligible new cardholders, such as bonus miles, reward points, cashback, vouchers or another benefit. The bonus is usually conditional: you may need to activate the card, spend a minimum qualifying amount within a deadline, pay an annual fee or meet other stated criteria. The headline value matters only if the conditions fit your normal spending.

    Common welcome-bonus structures

    • Bonus reward points or airline miles.
    • Cashback or statement credit.
    • Fee waiver for the first year.
    • Travel, lifestyle or partner vouchers.
    • Tiered bonuses unlocked after different spend thresholds.

The three things to check first

    QuestionWhy it matters
What must I do?Activation, qualifying spend, salary transfer or another condition may be required.
By when? The offer normally has a defined qualification period.
What actually counts?Excluded transactions can mean total card spend is higher than qualifying spend.

Example: headline bonus vs qualification cost

Illustration only: suppose a card advertises a welcome benefit worth up to AED 1,000 but requires AED 12,000 of qualifying spend within 60 days. If you would normally spend only AED 6,000 in that period, increasing purchases solely to chase the bonus may make the offer poor value. The right comparison is the value you can realistically earn from normal spending.

    What transactions might not count?

Issuers can exclude transaction types such as cash advances, balance transfers, fees, finance charges, wallet loads, quasi-cash transactions, government payments or other categories. Returned purchases can also reduce qualifying spend. The offer terms control the result.

How should UAE banks disclose the offer?

CBUAE Consumer Protection Standards require the terms, conditions and restrictions attached to rebates, gifts and other incentives to be disclosed clearly. Introductory offers must also state the relevant period and what applies when the promotion ends.

    How to compare welcome offers

    • Estimate whether you can meet the condition through normal spending.
    • Calculate the realistic value of the bonus, not just the advertised number of points.
    • Check the annual fee and whether it applies immediately or later.
    • Review product benefits after the welcome period.
    • Check whether you are excluded as an existing or recent customer.
    • Avoid carrying a balance merely to achieve a bonus.

    Frequently asked questions

Does every new cardholder receive the welcome bonus?

Not necessarily. Eligibility and qualification conditions apply.

When is a welcome bonus credited?

The offer terms specify when the issuer verifies qualification and credits the benefit.

Do refunded purchases still count toward the spend requirement?

They may be reversed from qualifying spend. Check the programme rules.

Can existing customers receive the same welcome offer?

Some offers exclude existing or recently closed cardholders. Eligibility is issuer-specific.

Is a welcome bonus worth paying an annual fee?

It can be, but compare the one-time bonus with the ongoing annual fee and the card’s long-term value.
