    Quick answer

An auto loan is financing provided by a bank or finance company to help an individual purchase a private vehicle. Under current CBUAE rules, a car loan must not exceed 80% of the financed vehicle’s value, which means the borrower generally needs to fund at least 20% from other resources. The maximum repayment period is 60 months, and the vehicle is used as security for the facility.

Maximum finance-to-value80% of the financed passenger vehicle value
Minimum borrower contribution implied by the capAt least 20%
    Maximum repayment period60 months
SecurityThe vehicle is mortgaged/pledged as security for the loan

Example: financing a AED 120,000 car

Illustration only: if a car is valued at AED 120,000, the maximum regulated car-loan amount at 80% would be AED 96,000. The borrower would need at least AED 24,000 toward the purchase price, before considering registration, insurance, valuation or other transaction costs.

How does the bank decide whether to approve the loan?

Meeting the 80% financing limit does not guarantee approval. The lender also assesses income, existing debts, repayment history, credit information, employment or income stability and its own underwriting criteria. CBUAE standards require a responsible affordability assessment before credit is granted.

    What rate should you compare?

CBUAE guidance requires reducing-balance calculation for car loans and disclosure of the effective annual rate. If a flat rate is advertised, the equivalent effective rate must be stated alongside it. Compare APR/effective rate, total repayment and fees rather than the flat headline alone.

What happens if you settle a car loan early?

The CBUAE retail-fee annex lists car-loan/financing early settlement at 1% of the outstanding balance. Ask for a formal settlement quotation and the vehicle-release/NOC process before paying.

What costs sit outside the loan?

    • Your contribution toward the vehicle price.
    • Motor insurance.
    • Registration and testing where applicable.
    • Possible valuation or dealer-related costs.
    • Loan processing or other permitted banking fees shown in the KFS.
